Online Lesson War Poetry

Our flag rose high above in the air

A red dot in the middle

Malaysia is down

Little red dot is next

Zero planes fly in the sky

Sinking the “unsinkable ship”

Their “flying coffins” were outdated

So were their anti-tank guns

We used bicycle instead of tanks

Caught the British by surprise

Causeway bombed

Victory is soon ours

But our manpower decrease

More and more injured

Forced surrender

Our only chance

Hiding our weakness

Forcing British to surrender

White flag came

And the flag with red dot rise

Online Lesson R&R War

Passage A

1) Sandburg is describing anti-aircraft gun that juts out from the sides of the ships.

2) The “jackies” in these lines refer to the common sailors on board the war ship. They were singing “war chanties” because they wanted to raise their morale and boost their confidence when fighting for war.

3) Both guns and shovel s are made of iron. When they use the gun to fight for war, they would have to use the shovel to dig a grave for the dead soldiers in the war. Thus, both are similar and brothers not only because they are both made from iron, but also they were interlinked and could not be separated. When there is war, there will inevitably be death and injury, as represented by the phrase “oblong vaults”.

Passage B

4) The significance of the poem title is to show that the citizens had no authority or no voice to speak up from themselves during war time. They could only listen and obey to instructions from the soldiers. Thus, it showed that the commanding people during war had very high authorities and the citizens were weak.

5) In stanza 1, the tone is serious and depressing, to see all the properties being destroyed. However, there is a contrast in stanza 2, where all the properties were rebuilt and it represents hope and peace. Therefore, it gave us the effect that the soldiers had a very nonchalant attitude towards the destruction caused by the war. It gave us the impression that the destruction and rubble caused could be cleared and rebuilt easily. The persona attitude was clearly shown in the last sentence of each stanza. They command people and the snobbish and arrogant attitude was shown clearly.

6) In my opinion, I think it is harder to rebuild a society than to tear it down. To tear down a society, you can accomplish it with easy means, by using your powerful weapons and the properties will be down and reduced to rubble in seconds. However, to rebuild the society and properties, it took years and years to clear the rubble and go back to square one. They will have to slowly rebuild the buildings again and that took years of hard work and foundation. For example, in the recent Japan earthquake, the properties and buildings were demolished and “swiped” away in seconds. However, to clear the mess and slowly remove the rubble one by one before rebuilding took more than years. Thus, it is harder to rebuild a society than to tear it down.

Passage C

7) In the ancient times, people rode on houses when they go for war and that caused the sound of hoofs and feet. However, now people rode on big tanks and vehicles, creating the sound of the motor in the machine. In the future, the “silent wheels” represent that the machines they used hover above the ground, probably teleporting machines as even air planes make sounds. Therefore, when teleporting, it is silent and swift.

8) In World War 2, General Percival was “kicked under the dust” as he was caught off-guard. The Japanese attack from Malaysia and caught the British by surprise. Therefore, General Percival surrender in the end due to the surprise and swift attack form the Japanese.

Narrative scene without punctuation

It was a very hot day such that not even a leaf stirred and Tom was perspiring profusely that big droplets of sweat trickled down his side chin but at the same time a sturdy looking man approached him with big strides and at such a tremendous speed that Tom was taken aback as thousands of wild thoughts raced through his mind causing him to stand rooted to the ground as if roots had sprouted from his ankle while the man slowly closed up the gap between him and Tom and in the end gave Tom a shove at the shoulders that Tom fell to the ground with a loud thud !

Should same-sex marriage be allowed?

Same-sex marriage will be allowed by Singapore government even in the future. This is because same-sex marriage does not inflict harm or damage to the people, or cause instability in the society or country. Same-sex marriage could also increase child adoptions. Last but not least, same-sex marriage is becoming more and more common and people are slowly accepting them.

Same-sex marriage will be allowed by Singapore government even in the future. This is because same-sex marriage does not bring about damage or harm to other people not involved in the marriage. Also, Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew once said that even if there were homosexuals in the Parliament, so long as they does their work and look after their constituents, it is their private life. Thus, it suggests that even if same-sex marriage is allowed, so long as people carry on with their assigned task and do not hurt others, it would be fine with all other people. Marriage is a commitment within two parties and is no other’s business. Therefore, same-sex marriage will be allowed as it does not bring about other’s danger and cause harm to others.

Same-sex marriage will be allowed by Singapore government even in the future. This is because it will increase child adoption, since according to Section 377A of the Penal Code, sex between two men is an offence. However, even so, there will still be a desire between same-sex couples to have a family. Therefore, there would be a higher rate of child adoption, and it gives more children a chance to experience what it is like to be a part of a family. They would have a proper family sheltered by love, warmth and joy. Therefore, same-sex marriage will be allowed by Singapore government as it could aid in increasing the child adoption rate and bring joy and hopes to more children, also known to bring wealth to the country in the future.

Last but not least, same-sex marriage will be allowed by Singapore government even in the future because it has become more common and many people were slowly willing to change their mind set and accept them into the society. This is because the homosexuals also do not want this, but they are born in that way which cannot be helped, therefore, more and more people were accepting them. As such, same-sex marriage is legally recognised in Argentina, Belgium, Canada, Iceland, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, South Africa, Spain, and Sweden. Thus, Singapore government will accept same-sex marriage in the future as the society is beginning to welcome and accept them.

In conclusion, same-sex marriage will be allowed by Singapore Government in the future as it can promote child adoption. It also does not inflict any form of harm on others and the society is slowly accepting it as well.
